Downtown Dallas Texas Pilates

What Is Pilates?

Joseph H. Pilates in the picture above here at age 54, called the form of exercise "Contrology". Pilates is an exercise program that keeps you always wanting more, always looking forward to the next workout. The Pilates Method leaves you refreshed and alert with a sense of accomplishment, and a feeling of physical and mental well being. The Authentic Pilates Method of body conditioning does all this... and more. This mind-body method of exercise builds strong abdominals, improves posture and coordination, and builds long lean muscles.

Joseph H. Pilates, developed the Pilates Method in the 1920's as an exercise system that creates flexibility and strength for the entire body. He believed that physical and mental health went hand in hand to form the mind and the body.

Exercises are performed on a mat and on specially designed equipment. The Pilates system includes exercises for every part of the body and applications for every kind of activity. Created in the early part of the 20th century, Pilates was so far ahead of it’s time that it did not begin to achieve popular recognition until the first few years of the 21st century. Over 10 million people are now practicing Pilates in the United States and the numbers are growing every year.

The consistent practice of Pilates yields numerous benefits. Just as in Yoga, Pilates puts emphasis first on breathing. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, coordination -- both muscular and mental, are key components in an effective Pilates program. Posture, balance, and core strength are all heartily increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into other areas of one's life.
